Hi there! Welcome to my home on the internet— I'm so glad you're here!
I'm Kaylee Hagen, the recipe developer, writer, and photographer behind all things Honey, I Baked a Cake! I hope to create a space where home bakers of all levels feel comfortable diving in and learning new techniques and skills they can apply in their own kitchens. Websites like this are how I learned to bake, and every recipe is written so there’s something for both the baker just starting out and the more experienced baker looking for something new. There’s still a lot I don’t know, but everything I do know, complete with every helpful tip and trick, is there in the recipes.

I didn't start baking seriously until recently—rewind to March 2020 and I was still a musical theatre performer and dancer (albeit one with some toes out the proverbial door). As the world shut down, so did my career. I tried a few different things—I painted, took a sewing course, nannied, and both started and retired from a career as a real estate agent—but it was baking that stuck. At first, I didn’t think of it as anything more than a hobby, or perhaps therapy. However, people seemed to like what I baked (including my husband, Nick, or, in online
recipe land, “Honey”), and there is nothing like a pandemic and mid- (quarter?) life crisis to prompt you to really go for something new, so…here we are. This website is the result of now-years of me turning on jazz music, opening the back door, and jetting off to culinary dreamland. Baking has stretched me, healed me, and given me an outlet to be an artist again. Hence, Honey, I Baked a Cake!
I currently live in New York City on the Upper West Side with Nick (a couple of blocks away from Rick Moranis, the star of the 1989 film that may or may not have inspired the name of this page). When I'm not baking, I love walking in Central Park, lifting (medium-sized) weights, dancing, reading, and power-napping.
Well, that's probably enough about me! Now throw on your favorite music, open the nearest window or door, tie on your apron, and let's get baking!
